Mise en Scene Analysis: Migos - Slippery ft Gucci Mane

'Slippery' by Migos is a perfect example of a stereotypical hip-hop video; big house, expensive jewellery, drugs, expensive cars, girls in bikinis. A lot of the lyrics refer to 'ice', 'being cold' and 'anaemia', referring to their excessive use and wear of diamonds.

In this scene (also the hook of the song) at the start of the video (right) Quavo, 1/3 of Migos can be seen in a swimming pool surrounded by attractive women, stereotypically black/latino women in hip-hop. He can also be seen wearing lots of presumably expensive jewellery which again is a statement as to how much money they make; almost asserting dominance.

This scene is Offset's verse. His scene/verse in this video isn't as explicit as Quavo's, as he only has 1 girl with him. The convention of flexing (showing off what material possessions you own/how much money you have) is still here as he is wearing diamonds and a full designer outfit. Overall in this video isn't very narrative and is very performance based.

The 3rd verse in the video belongs to the feature of this song and Migos' close friend Gucci Mane (right). His whole scene takes place next to his convertible Rolls Royce Wraith, a very expensive and luxurious car, again strengthening the hip-hop convention of artists liking to flex. Although, like Offset and contrary to Quavo, Gucci isn't surrounded by women, instead is accompanied by his now wife Keyshia Ka'Oir. Gucci is seriously defying the stereotype/convention that rappers like to have about 10 women at once by not having just a girlfriend but a wife.

The last verse belongs to Quavo's nephew, Takeoff (above). Again like a lot of this music video, a lot of the emphasis is on the performance element and less so the narrative. Similarly to Offset and Gucci Mane, Takeoff's verse is just him and 1 other woman in a bathroom, but again he is very well dressed and wearing a lot of diamonds, so the flexing element is still there.
